Auckland is an easy city to travel with children in. Water on both sides, parks everywhere, and enough short trips that nobody has to sit still for long.
Start on the water
The harbour ferries are the cheapest attraction in the city. Ten minutes to Devonport, an ice cream at the other end, and back again. Everyone is happy.
Beaches that suit small people
The eastern bays are calm and shallow, with grass behind the sand and cafes within sight. On the North Shore the beaches are wider and the surf is gentler than the west coast.
When it rains
Museums and the aquarium absorb an afternoon comfortably. Book ahead in school holidays and go early.
Where to stay
Our family-friendly homes have the space, the laundry and the kitchen that make a trip with children work. Room to spread out, and a proper host at the end of the phone.
